About Kingmakers of Oakland

At Kingmakers of Oakland, we fundamentally believe that all Black males are brilliant, beautiful, and possess innate greatness. Because our society and educational systems aren't set up to help Black boys reach their potential, our collective opportunity and responsibility are to co-create the school environment every child deserves. The Kingmakers of Oakland approach proves that it is possible to rebuild school systems, structures, culture, and conditions so Black boys can thrive.

KOO is comprised of a multicultural, intergenerational team of people committed to transforming education systems to improve educational and life outcomes for Black students. We do this through partnerships with school districts across the country to offer leadership development and systems change initiatives that ‘heal the fish while treating the toxic ecosystem.’  Acknowledging that systemic change occurs outside the classroom as well, Kingmakers invested in a brick-and-mortar building in Oakland, CA that will serve as a place-based community program hub that empowers youth and community members with opportunities to develop marketable skills across multiple industries, including music, video, and clothing manufacturing.
