This is your invitation for the role of Senior Director of Communications at Kingmakers of Oakland. Reporting to the Managing Director of Media and Technology, the Senior Director of Communications will

  • Manage and supervise a team of marketing and design professionals
  • Set and guide the strategy for all communications, website, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate KOO’s mission and align with, brand identity, digital standards and editorial policies
  • Collaborate with the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, Board Committees and others, on branding, marketing, and communications strategies

  • Has expert knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning
  • Has the ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels 
  • Has impeccable writing, editing and storytelling skills to craft stories that impact people viscerally to become part of the movement



  • Highly developed skills to create and implement Branding and Marketing Strategies to develop brand loyalty and client relations
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities
  • Create and implement editorial and production calendars to ensure marketing collateral and communications assets are planned, scheduled and delivered appropriately
  • Lead and coordinate all activities of communications, marketing and PR consultants
  • Build and maintain comprehensive brand awareness and strengthen relationships with targeted stakeholder groups
  • Measure and evaluate conversion rates for varying marketing strategies. 
  • Direct media strategy, cultivate and sustain effective working relationships to position KOO as a thought leader in education
  • Create and distribute asset-based content and media that drives client growth and increases our communications impact
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of the Media and Public Relations database
  • Manage and analyze social media posts across all platforms



  • Seven (7) or more years of branding, marketing communications, content creation experience in an education and/or nonprofit environment
  • Mission alignment as it relates to systemic change in education, and engaging, encouraging and empowering youths of color, families and educators 
  • Thought partner to brainstorm short-term and long-term solutions to address organizational challenges
  • Value and contribute to sustaining a workplace culture based on trust, collaboration, respect, and honesty
  • Highly developed skills to create and implement Branding and Marketing Strategies to develop brand loyalty and client relations
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, program participants, parents and other supporters
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to successfully navigate within a young start-up nonprofit environment
  • Proficiency with common office software programs, video conferencing, and a variety of web-based platforms


This is a full-time exempt position that requires occasional in-person attendance. Salary range $130,000 - $150,000 annually.
