Development Manager

Oakland, CA
Full Time
Mid Level

We fundamentally believe that all Black males are brilliant, beautiful, and possess innate greatness. We also understand that our society and educational systems are not set up to help Black boys reach their potential, so our collective opportunity and responsibility is to co-create the school environment every child deserves. The Kingmakers’ approach proves that it is possible to rebuild the systems, structures, culture, and conditions of schools so Black boys and youth can thrive.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a committed, collaborative, and forward-thinking team at a quickly growing Black-led organization that has a team of passionate, fun, intelligent professionals who have demonstrated a commitment to engaging, encouraging, and empowering the next generation of leaders and changemakers.

The Development Manager will be part of a small development team, which is responsible for executing the organization’s development goals, meeting annual fundraising goals, and implementing strategies to increase donor engagement and giving.

  • Will be inspired by Kingmakers of Oakland’s mission of improving life and educational outcomes for Black males and equally passionate about leveraging resource development as an accelerator for achieving our mission.
  • Will excel at the art and science of excellent fund development work, with high emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills combined with the ability to build systems and use data to support the management of individual, foundation, government, and corporate donors.

  • Manage the grants and contracts pipeline - writing proposals, ensuring compliance, managing the master calendar, etc.
  • Support the maintenance of existing donor relationships while helping grow the donor base.
  • Collaborate with various departments to coordinate external communications about the impact and both large- and small-scale annual fundraising events.
  • Prepare and present reports on fundraising activities to senior leadership.
  • Understand fundraising and development metrics.
  • Maintain donor (corporate, philanthropic, individual) record-keeping in Salesforce

  • Minimum 2-3 years' experience working in fundraising, development, or a similar role, particularly identifying, cultivating, and stewarding donors.
  • Record of accomplishment of success in development, resource development, and/or creative fundraising.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills for building relationships with existing and potential donors.
  • Ability to relate the story of Kingmakers and build relationships with existing and potential donors and partners.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Technological savvy and analytical abilities to build effective donor tracking systems and measure progress.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and donor database software; experience with Salesforce and/or Constant Contact, a plus.

  • Strong anti-racist lens, self-reflective, and comfortable challenging themselves to grow and learn continually.
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices in fundraising.
  • Understanding the social impact sector (impact investors, nonprofits, and foundations).
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively and learning on the job every day.
